HIV Care in Philadelphia

Addressing Concerns

According to 2022 data by the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 1.2 million people were living with HIV. However, for every 100 of those people living with the virus, only 87 of them knew their HIV status. That means thirteen percent of the population living with HIV are unaware of it. Don’t be one of the people living in the dark about their health — visit our HIV clinic in Philadelphia for comprehensive testing and care. We accept appointments from all patients regardless of their health insurance status.

Who Is Vulnerable?

The risks for getting HIV are numerous: sixty-seven percent of the new cases come from male-to-male (MSM) sexual contact, twenty-two percent of the cases come from heterosexual contact, and seven percent come from persons who use IV drugs.

New Cases

Many new cases of HIV are still disproportionately found in Hispanic/Latino and Black/African American communities, affecting both MSM and heterosexual minorities.

Why You Should Seek Protection

Having a sexually transmitted infection, such as syphilis or gonorrhea, also increases the risk of getting or giving HIV significantly. As of 2022, the number of cases of both syphilis and gonorrhea has been the highest in over 40 years. This is another reason for protecting your sexual health by using condoms and having testing done often.

The Conversation

TESTING IS NORMAL. Having a conversation with your primary care provider about the type of sex (oral, anal, vaginal) you are having, the number of partners you have, and the gender of your partners will help determine your vulnerability. Protect yourself from an infection by scheduling an appointment with an HIV specialist at Spectrum Health Services today.

HIV Prevention: PrEP

Your provider can also recommend HIV prevention methods. Currently, using a daily pill or an injection every other month after the first two injections is available. This is called PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis). PrEP is for anyone who is sexually active and wants to protect themselves from HIV, no matter their gender or sexual preferences. If you’re concerned about taking a pill or injection every other month, be on the lookout for other options, as there are new methods coming in the near future.

HIV Prevention: PEP

Protection from HIV can also come AFTER any unexpected, unprotected sexual encounter or accidental needle stick. This is called PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis). This is oral medication that you can take for 28 days to prevent getting HIV, but it must be taken within 72 hours of any sexual encounter. Either of these current methods are 96 to 99% effective in HIV prevention. Speak to an HIV specialist at our Philadelphia clinic to learn more about your treatment options and preventative measures.

What Is HIV?

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system and makes you more vulnerable to infections and diseases. HIV is spread through contact with semen, vaginal fluids, and blood — often during unprotected sex or through sharing needles or syringes.

It’s important to note that there’s no cure for HIV, but there are medications that can help you stay healthy and reduce the chances of spreading the infection to others. If you’re at risk for HIV, visit your local HIV clinic in Philadelphia to get on medications that will help protect you.

How Do You Know If You Have HIV?

Unfortunately, you can’t tell if you have HIV just by the way you feel. In fact, most people with an HIV infection don’t have any symptoms at all for years. Therefore, the only way to know for sure whether or not you have HIV is to get tested.

Thankfully, HIV testing is pretty easy and pain-free. And if you do have HIV, it’s in your best interest to find out as soon as possible so you can take medication to stay healthy and lower your chances of transmitting HIV to others.

How Is HIV Treated?

HIV treatment typically involves the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART). This combination of medications works to:

  • Reduce the viral load in the body to undetectable levels
  • Protect the immune system
  • Prevent the transmission of HIV to others

With adherence to ART, individuals living with HIV can enjoy improved quality of life and reduced risk of complications. Regular monitoring and support from a trusted HIV program are essential for maintaining health and addressing any challenges that may arise.
